Born in Belgium, Mr. van Haelewyn joined the Belgium army when he was a 14 year old orphan. He met Mrs. Isabel R.Y. Marble when he was injured and taken to the hospital where he met her. She was working as part of a group of American women contributing to the war effort in World War I by treating Belgian soldiers. He then came to the United Staters with her in 1920 and lived in Wilton ever since.
He was an artist and an active member of the Silvermine Guild in New Canaan in the 1920s and 1930s.
In honor of his adoptive mother, Mrs. Marble, Mr van Haelewyn donated almost 28 acres of woodland between DeForest and Woodhill roads to the Wllton Land Conservation Trust in 1990.
He was the son of the late Edmond and Melanie van Haelewyn, and has a son, Henry of Gladys, Va., and a daughter, Jane Watton of New York. -bio based on obituary in the Wilton Bulletin 1/8/1992 p2
