US Congressman. He graduated from Jackson Tennessee College in 1839, studied law at Harvard University, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Shelbyville, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives in 1849, presidential elector on the Constitutional Union ticket in 1860 and a Union delegate to the State constitutional convention of 1861. He was again elected to the Tennessee State House of Representatives in 1865. Upon the readmission of the State of Tennessee to representation after the Civil War, he was elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-ninth Congress, serving (1866-67). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed by President Johnson Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, serving 1867-69). He then resumed the practice of law until his death at age 89.
