Elihu Ackerman enlisted as a Private in Company E of the Tenth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on November 28, 1861, for 3 years service. He was discharged for disability on July 24, 1862, at Detroit, Michigan. Elihu then enlisted as a Private in the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry on September 27, 1864, for 3 years service. He was promoted to Corporal on October 5,1864, and mustered out of service on May 26,1866, at Houston, Texas.

Elihu was a preacher after the war.
