Conrad Liberty, a retired L.A. County Ocean Lifeguard, passed away on October 17, 2011 at age sixty-nine.
He grew up in Canoga Park. After swimming and playing water polo at Pierce College, he joined the Navy and was assigned to the USS Ranger home ported in Alameda.
At that time, he joined the Dolphin Swim Club of San Francisco, and made forty-three consecutive Golden Gate swims and more than thirty escape from Alcatraz swims.
Serving as a naval weatherman (1965-1967), Conrad was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Navy Unit Citation. He earned a B.A. and M.A. at Cal State LA.
A respected and popular lifeguard at Venice, Santa Monica, and other southland beaches, he made more than 500 water rescues during his thirty-eight-year career.
He helped found L.A. County Ocean Lifeguard Association (LACOLA), and for several years lobbied on their behalf in Sacramento. He retired as a lifeguard captain in 1998.
Conrad is survived by the love of his life, Marla, daughter Karena (Walter Gurr), son Eric (Ashley), and four grandchildren, all of El Segundo.
Like his father, Eric is now watching the water as an ocean lifeguard.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2011 on the south side of the Venice North Breakwater Station.
