Grover (Bill) Burgner of Route 8, Tusculum, died Monday morning at his home.

A retired farmer, he had been in ill health for several years.

He answered the call for his country at Fort Oglethrope, Ga. October 26, 1942, where he trained as a rifleman with infantry weapons including the Browning Automatic Rifle, rifle grenades, hand grenades, bazooka, bayonet and trench knife. After his training in the USA, he departed March 23, 1944, for Europe where he fought in Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland and in Central European campains.

Mr. Burgner received a bronze arrowhead for participation in the invasion of France June 8, 1944. He received a Purple Heart when he was wounded in Normandy at St. Georges July 5, 1944.

Other decorations and citations include the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with for bronze sevice stars, American Theather Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

Upon returning home he farmed until his long-suffering illness took the joy out of his. All who knew him could see how he enjoyed working the land.

Among the survivors are his wife: Mrs. Nancy Burgner, two sons: Billy Clay and Tony Dean Burgner, both of Greene County; a daughter: Lynnis Fay Bean of Morristown; two grandchildren: Deanna Paige Burgner of Greene County, and Tammie Lynn Stanton of Morristown; four sisters: Mrs. Oscar (Willie) Jones and Mrs. Mary Hogan, both of Flordia, Mrs. F.N. (Belle) Taylor and Mrs Raymond (Anna) Hall, both of Greene County; a brother: William Burgner Jr. of Greene County; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.F Burgner, three half-sisters, four half-brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2pm at Doughty-Stevens Chapel with internment in Greenelawn Memory Gardens. Father William Casey and the Rev. Clyde Ricker will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Donald and Bobby Burgner, John Taylor and Jackie, Dale, and Wayne Johnson.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 this evening at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.
