Kenneth J. Wernli

LE MARS, Iowa -- Kenneth J. Wernli, 91, of Detroil Lakesm Minn., formerly of Le Mars, died Friday at his residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home, Le Mars. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be on prior to his services.

Mr. Wernli was born April 5, 1907, in Whittemore, Iowa, to Otto and Dorthea (Hahn) Wernli. He was raised in the Le Mars area.

He graduated from Le Mars High School in 1925, then attended Western Union College, Le Mars.

He married Elizabeth H. Clark on June 14, 1930 in Le Mars. The couple lived in Sioux City, where he worked for Sioux Metal Products. In 1947 they moved to Hudson, Ohio, where he continued to work for Sioux Metal Products in its Bedford, Ohio, plant. In 1950 he joined Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. as a store front representative of its Kokomo, Ind., plant and in 1961 they moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., where he worked in the general office until 1966.

After that he traveled throughout the United States, working with the firm’s branches. He retired April 1, 1970, and moved to Detroit Lakes, Minn. in 1972.

Mrs. Wernli died July 27, 1989.

Mr. Werli was a member of the Congregational church of Detroit Lakes. He was an active member of the Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary Club. Since July 1, 1972, he served as a director, bulletin editor and secretary-treasurer, and received many awards for Best Bulletin, Club Service and Rotarian of the Year.

He was a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of various Rotary clubs since 1942. He was a member of Tyrian Lodge 508 A.F.&.A.M., Sioux City, Scottish Rite of Free Masonary - 32nd degree, Sioux City and ABU-Bekr-Temple Shrine, Sioux City.

Survivors include a son, Robert of Hudson, Ohio; a daughter and her husband, Beverly and John Bahl of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother and his wife, Donald and Jeri Wernli, of Salem, Ore.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen and James Wernli.
