The son of John & Mary Freese; siblings: Nancy, Daniel, John, Susan, Mary, Jeremiah, and Joseph.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg October 15, 1862, and mustered there into federal service October 20 with Battery C, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa), at the rank of private. Discharged March 18, 1863, by special order.
