Harkness served with Company A, 72nd Ohio Infantry. He enlisted on October 10, 1861 in Clyde, Ohio. He was captured on June 11, 1864 at the Battle of Gunntown in Mississippi and sent to Andersonville Prison. He escaped from Andersonville and was recaptured. He was then sent to Georgetown, South Carolina in December of 1864. In late February 1865, Harkness was sent by rail from South Carolina to Wilmington, North Carolina. At Fair Bluff Station, Harkness and several fellow prisoners escaped from the train and walked to Union lines at Smithville, North Carolina. He then boarded the USS General Sedgwick that was bound for Annapolis, Maryland and from there journeyed to Columbus, Ohio on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He was immediately discharged upon arrival on March 14, 1865.
On October 4, 1865 in Seneca county, Ohio, Harkness married Jemmetta 'Nettie' Almond. Harkness and Nettie had children: Francis Marion, Elizabeth, and Jessie.
