His parents were Rev. Wentworth Hayden and Lovina (Ames) Hayden, both bn in Maine. The family migrated to Minnesota in 1856, where Rev. Wentworth worked in churches. He also had served in Maine State Legislature, and then in the Minnesota Territorial Legislature.

Charles was one of eight children; he and two brothers, D.Wentworth, and Alonza, served in the Civil War in Minnesota 1st Reg., Co. E, Heavy Artillery; his brother, Alonzo, died in the battle of Gettysburg.

After the War, Charles worked as a lumberman. He married Letitia A. Pearson on 31 Aug. 1893, Hennepin.

They moved to Beltrami Co. MN, at Bemidji. (His name appears in a Champlin Cem. listing w/o dates, but military info).
