Stella Mitchel was born August 26, 1850 to Ormbsy and Louise Mitchel in Cincinnati, Ohio. She died on April 3, 1851 in Cincinnati, Ohio, from an inflammation of the brain.

She was buried in the Foote Family Lot, Section 77, Lot 90, in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. The lot owner, James Preston Foote, was a close friend of Ormsby Mitchel. Foote backed Mitchel's organizing of the Cincinnati Astronomical Society and published Mitchel's "Sidereal Messenger," the earliest magazine in the US devoted to astronomy.

Stella was later removed from Spring Grove Cemetery and moved to Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York on October 3, 1861.
