The son of Ormsey McKnight Mitchel, and brother of Erwin William Mitchel. Frederick was an author. His passport indicated that he was 5'4" with brown eyes, gray hair, a square forehead, a Roman nose, and a narrow face. His wife Maria G. Mitchel applied for his widows military pension in 1918.
