United States Army General. He retired from the United States Army 1996 as a Lieutenant General. He saw combat in Vietnam, was Commandant of the Army War College from 1987 to 1989. He was also served as Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, working first under Navy Adm. William Crowe and then Gen. Colin L. Powell. He was superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1991 until 1996. He served as chancellor of the Texas A&M University System from 1999 until August 2003.
