John was the son of William Thomas and Ida Emma Worley Green. He was born on May 7, 1901, in North Carolina, probably Haywood County. In 1910 and 1920, John was living with his parents and siblings in Crabtree, Haywood, North Carolina. He married Jeanette Timberman Lewis on March 21, 1928. Jeanette was born in Pilesgrove, Salem, New Jersey on August 26, 1905. She is the daughter of Horace G. and Jennie Goforth Lewis.

In 1930, they were living in Mantua, Gloucester, New Jersey were John was working as a farm laborer. At that time, they had two children, Irving L. Green and Olive May Green. I believe their other children are Agnes Shirley Green, Carl Nolan Green, and Kenneth Green. John died on September 27, 1985, at the Cooper Medical Center, Camden, New Jersey. He was buried in the Woodstown Baptist Burial Ground, Woodstown, New Jersey.
