Biography 1:
Asher Beal, an early settler and worthy citizen of Superior, Neb., was born in Guernsey County, Ohio, on February 7, 1848, and was reared in that and Tuscarawas Counties. During the summer months he assisted his father on the farm, and the winter months were passed in attending the common schools, where he received a good practical education. When eighteen years of age he started out to fight life's battles for himself and first made his way to Northern Michigan, where he spent a few months laboring in the lumber regions. After this he came westward to Marion County, Iowa, spent three years laboring as a farm hand, and was one year engaged in farming for himself.
In 1871 he came to Nebraska and pre-empted 160 acres in Webster County and subsequently homesteaded the same tract. Upon this he resided until 1876, when he sold it and after spending a year in Crete, Neb., he came to Superior, Neb., which town, at that time, contained less than a dozen houses. Here in the fall of 1877 he and Mr. Andrew C. McCorkle established a general store, the second of the kind in the town. Mr. Beal continued engaged in merchandising until 1890, and during the years 1888 and 1889 he erected the large and handsome brick hotel in Superior, known as the "Thueman House". After renting this property a year, he took charge of it himself, and he is now conducting it in such a way as to bring it into popular and universal favor with the public.
Mr. Beal has been twice married; first, on January 27, 1869, to Miss Margaret J. Tidrick, who died on April 12, 1876, leaving three children : Anna Maud, Charles Sumner and Aris Robert. Charles Sumner died at the age of nine years. Mr. Beal was married to Miss Martha J. Crowell, his present wife, on April 12, 1878, and five children have been born to this union: John Earl, Lulu, Dot, Godfrey and Hazel, of whom John Earl died when three years of age.
Mr. Beal is a member of the I. O. O. F., the A. O. U. W., and in politics he is a Democrat. He has served one term as justice of the peace, and in 1881 was the candidate of his party for county treasurer, and although he ran far ahead of his ticket he failed to overcome a large opposing majority. He is an upright, worthy man, and he and Mrs. Beal rank among Superior's best citizens.
His parents, Harlan and Cynthia (Asher) Beal, were natives of Guernsey County, Ohio, born in 1822 and Harrison County, Ohio, born March 31, 1818, respectively. They were married at Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on February 22, 1844, and became the parents of ten children: Osman T., Aeher, Samantha B., L. U., Newton, Amanda, Isaac Harlan, Hattie M. , Alonzo and Ananias. Hattie M. died on October 19, 1889, leaving a husband and two children.
The father of the above-named children died at Newton, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on January 18, 1867. He was a successful farmer and stock-raiser and accumulated considerable property, owning at the time of his death three good farms. He was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The mother still survives, her home being in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and she, also, is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
The paternal grandparents of our subject, Isaac and Martha (Todd) Beal, were natives of Pennsylvania. His maternal grandparents were Anthony and Amelia (Parks) Asher, and his great grandparents on his mother's side were Luke and Elizabeth Asher, who were natives of Scotland. The last two emigrated to America, and located near Freeport, Ohio. The Parks family descended from an emigrant from England.

In 1867, emigrated to Iowa, locating in Marion County, where he engaged in farming until 1871, and sold out and came to Nebraska, locating in Webster County, taking a homestead three miles west of Guide Rock. Improved his farm, and lived there until 1876, when he sold out and went to Crete, Saline County.
The following spring, came to Superior, Nuckolls County, and, in company with Mr. Corkle, put up a building and put in a stock of general merchandise, and continued in the business until 1880. He sold out and put up a store building 20x100 feet, and put in a fine stock of goods, and has built up a trade that he might well be proud of.
Mr. Beal is public-spirited, and has taken a lively interest in the town. His business has more than doubled since he came here, and he is one of the men who helped to build up the town.
