Merle Gene Bickel, 83, of Charlottesville, died on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born in Pennsylvania on February 6, 1928, the son of the late George and Mary A. Patterson Bickel. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Miner Bickel; his children, Darl Bickel, Jeff Bickel, Randy Bickel and his wife Theresa, Julie Garner and her husband, David; a sister, Mabel Turnbull; eight grandchildren and six great- grandchildren, many special friends and his very special buddy, "Honey Bear."

Mr. Bickel was a member and former trustee of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, a former member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church Choir and a veteran of the United States Army. He was a retired Nuclear Health Physicist.

A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2011, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Reverend Scott E. Davis and the Reverend Claude Reed officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1550 Rio Road East, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
