He was born in Martinsburg, son of George and Mary (Patterson) Bickel. He married Ethel Mae Harper Sept. 19, 1947, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, State College. She died Nov. 5, 1989.
Surviving are two sons: Gary H. and wife, Penny, of Morrisdale and Greg W. and wife, Lucinda, of Bald Eagle; a daughter, Diane Kress and husband, Lance, of Hillsborough, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Turnbaugh of Duncansville; and a brother, Merle of Charlottesville, Va.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donette Bourke; three brothers; and two sisters.
Mr. Bickel retired in 1979 from Westvaco, Tyrone, as an electrician after 32 years of service. He had farmed in Bald Eagle for many years.
Hays enjoyed hunting, fishing, football, wrestling and county fairs.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Feller Memorial Home, Tyrone, where a funeral service with veteran's honors by the Tyrone Honor Guard will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, Pastor Clare Pannebaker officiating. Interment will follow at Blair Memorial Park.
