George grew up in Batavia and graduated from Batavia High School in 1940, where he played football, basketball and ran track. He enlisted in the Navy in 1940, and retired in 1960, as a chief petty officer. A turning point in his life was surviving the sinking of the USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier in the Battle of Coral Sea. During his rest and recovery in Batavia, he met the love of his life, Anne. They were married for 56 years until Anne passed away in 1999. George returned to Batavia after his retirement from the Navy and worked for the Batavia Park District and managed the Quarry Park, started the "Huddle" and other recreational activities. George worked at the Batavia School District in the Maintenance Department, drove buses for students and athletic teams as well as helped coach the tennis team. George was very active in youth sports activities in Batavia, and was affectionately called "George" by most of the children in Batavia. He was an avid tennis player who played until his 80s. George was a longtime member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where he served as a faithful Sunday school teacher, usher, Vacation Bible School helper, and created floats for the Loyalty Day Parade. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the Hessed House and RSVP. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Batavia Bulldog Athletics and was recognized as "Fan of the Year" in 2003. George loved Batavia and Batavia loved "George." He was able to see the good in everyone and provided encouragement to all he knew. He lived his life counting his many blessings. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to the George Von Hoff Youth Fund at Bethany Lutheran Church or the Batavia Park District.
