He was best known for playing the character roles of British lords, husbands, court clerks, doctors, inspectors, nightclub patrons, butlers, detectives, attendants, constables, soldiers, judges, majors, dental patients, military men, henchmen, watchmen, mourners, radio operators, and newsmen, in both silent films and sound films, but some were uncredited. He will be best remembered for playing the role of 'Cecil Greystoke in the action-adventure films, "Tarzan Of The Apes" (1918) and its sequel, "The Romance Of Tarzan" (1918). The action-adventure film, "Tarzan Of The Apes" (1918), was also his actual film debut. His last film role was playing a 'Hotel Patron' in the film drama, "Hotel" (1967). The film which was directed by Richard Quine, which was written for the screen by Wendell Mayes and based on the novel by Arthur Hailey, and which also starred Rod Taylor, Catherine Spaak, Karl Malden, and Melvyn Douglas, tells the story of a historical New Orleans hotel that struggles to financially survive while the dramas of its various guests unfold. He retired from acting shortly thereafter. He passed away in Los Angeles, California, on December 2, 1968, two days before what would have been his 80th birthday. His funeral service was held through Pierce Brothers Hollywood Mortuary and he was buried in Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California. He never married nor had any children.
