Married his cousin, Betsey Abbott. He was an expert carpenter. He served as a fifer in the War of 1812 and was at the battle of Lake Erie. He was made a prisoner of war in warm weather, when thinly clad and died at age 30 from exposure the following winter while in a prisoner of war camp in Nova Scotia.

Betsey was a very intelligent woman and during and after the war supported herself and her children by teaching. She was 92 when she died.
