Chief was a 10 months old Labrador-American Pit bull mix puppy. On December 9, 1996, his owners, Jay Johnson and Raquel Rivera, were shot and killed in their home, in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Chief was wounded while trying to protect his humans. When police arrived to investigate, Chief was taken to the veterinarian. Sadly Chief went into cardiac arrest, soon after surgery, and died. About thirty hours after his two owners were killed, Chief too became a victim of the crime.
Chief became known when his DNA linked two of the perpetrators to the crime. The first time ever where canine DNA was used in a murder trial in the U.S. One of the murderers was convicted of both the murders and also of animal cruelty.

Chief was a friendly dog who the neighborhood children would come visit.

Animal Planet's show "Animal Witness" devoted an episode to Chief and the case. It was titled "South Park Slaughters".
