John was the son of Alexander and Mary Ann (Taggart) Colt.

John was educated the the public schools of Northumberland and followed his father in the blacksmith trade, with his shop being located at the corners of Queen and Front Streets. For thirty years he worked in the blacksmith trade at which time he sold the business. He then owned a mercantile business and general store both of which were very profitable. He also dabbled in the real estate business and had several buildings erected on Queen Street. His residence which was built by James Lee in about 1800 was located on Market Street facing the beautiful Park Square.

For many years John served as borough council member and borough treasurer for three years, he also served as school board treasurer for several years. He was member of the Knights of Pythias for twenty - eight years, during which time he served as treasurer of that organization also. Politically he was a Republican and was liberal in his religious views (Book of Biographies of the Seventeenth Congressional District, p. 266).
