Alexander was the husband of Mary Ann Taggart.

Alexander's father was of Scotch-Irish descent and came to America after being banished from Ireland during the religious rebellion, he settled in Chester County, PA. Alexander Colt came to Northumberland in 1820 in search of a place where he could make his home and satisfy his ambitious spirit. With no trade or money he entered the employment of his Uncle Alexander Colt who was a skilled blacksmith. Being a blacksmith in these times one had to be a skilled mechanic as the wagon and carriage iron work was done by hand and Alexander became very skillful in the trade and succeeded his uncle in the business which was located at Water Street and Weakley's Alley. He was a member of the Whig political party later becoming a Republican and was politically active in borough affairs. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He died at the age of 80 yrs., (Book of Biographies of the Seventeenth Congressional District, pp. 265 - 266).
