Every census record, marriage certificate, civil war pension doc. just says "Matilda" as her name. Only record in ancestry.com that says "Mary Matilda" is this FindAGrave record. I would just say first name as "Matilda" with no middle name if there is no real proof like a tombstone photo. Otherwise something that probably false just keep getting copied and copied.

The name information was probably gotten from the son's memorial: James Lafayette Anderson (20997365) which reads James was the son of Matthew Anderson and Mary Matilda Maxwell.
