Stoner chaired the emergency medicine department at Lancaster General Hospital from 1981 to 1987.
Born November 26, 1926 in Mifflintown, he was the son of the Elmer C. and Mary Swartz Stoner. He and his wife, Jane Swope Stoner, were married 42 years in August. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four sons, Robert E. Jr. of Mount Airy, MD, Dr. Richard S. of Ocala, FL, John S. of Lancaster and Andrew R. of Dallas; and eight grandchildren.
Stoner was a 1952 graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, a 1949 graduate of Gettysburg College and a 1944 graduate of Juniata Joint High School.
He was medical director for the Lancaster County Office of Emergency Management and medical adviser to the Lancaster County EMT Training Institute, both since July 1983.
He was an associate of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a member of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Lancaster City and County Medical Society.
He was a board member for Meals on Wheels, a former board member of the Lancaster County Chapter of the American Red Cross and a member of the Red Cross Disaster Committee since 1985. Stoner was named 1992 Physician of the Year by the Lancaster General Hospital Nurse Practice Council.
He was the Juniata County coroner from 1956 to 1960.
He served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps during World War II.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, PA.
A memorial service was held at the Funeral Home of Fred F. Groff, Inc, Lancaster, Monday, with Chaplain Kenn Creitz and Rev. Keith R. Bitner officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
