Her mother died in 1887, survived by her father and seven children, ranging in age from 18 to 2. The next day, their house burned down. Edward was considered grown; Marshall, John, and Herbert were parceled out to friends and neighbors; and at the age of seventeen, Grace Agnes took 2 year old Harriet and 6 year old Frank to raise herself.
