Attended both Strasbourg and Heidelberg universities * 1836 arrived in the United States and began work in Philadelphia * 1837 married Fredrica Eisenbarth * 1839 moved to Cincinnati, Ohio * 1867 arrived in Cleveland *

Died January 10, 1882 Grasselli was born in Strasbourg in the then German province of Alsace. His father was a chemist as were his ancestors dating back to the Middle Ages. In 1836, Grasselli came to America and began work at a chemical manufacturer in Philadelphia.

He then moved to Cincinnati in 1839 and established his own company manufacturing sulfuric acid. In 1866, Grasselli opened a manufacturing plant in Cleveland and began producing sulfuric acid for the city''s oil refineries. He moved to Cleveland the following year. Located next to John D. Rockefeller''s Standard Oil Company refinery, the company prospered as E. Grasselli & Son.

In 1837, Grasselli married Fredrica Eisenbarth. The couple had nine children. After Grasselli''s death, the company was taken over and reorganized by his son Caesar Augustin Grasselli. As the Grasselli Chemical Company the firm became extremely successful and in 1928 merged with the E. I. Du Pont Company.
