Capt. Orlando N. Ferry, who for the past thirty-six years has been a resident of Cleveland, died at his home at midnight Monday from the result of an operation a week ago. Mr. Ferry had been in delicate health for many months and it was hoped by his family that the operation would restore him and prolong his life, but his vitality was too far spent to withstand the effects and he passed away painlessly.
Mr. Ferry was born in North Bloomfield, Trumbull county, Ohio, on July 22, 1837. His boyhood was spent on his father's farm and when the call came for volunteers in '61 he enlisted in the Sixth Ohio cavalry in October of that year and from a private filled each successive office until he reached a captain's commission, serving on the staff of Gen. Charles H. Smith for nearly a year, in which capacity he was acting at the time he was mustered out of service, Aug. 7, 1865.
After the war he came to Cleveland and engaged in the grocery business. For a number of years he was connected with the firm of W. P. Southworth & Co. Since 1881 he has held a responsible position in the Chandler & Rudd Co. Singularly painstaking and obliging he was the soul of honor in his business and in every relation of life he filled the complete measure. In the home in the church, in all the various activities in which he was a participant, he was ever at his post. A kind and tender husband, a loving father, a sincere friend, his life was beautiful in its simplicity and sweetness.
He leaves a widow, one daughter, mrs. Herbert Inkley of this city, and four sons, Charles, Horace, George and Alfred, all of whom are in business in Cleveland.
His sisters are Mrs. Lavinia Ruggles and Miss Mary Ferry of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. J. H. Bowe of Ventura, Cal., Mrs. A. W. Fenton and Mrs. Charles Baker of Cleveland; his brothers, Dr. L. A. Ferry of Genesco, Ill., and Mr. N. F. Ferry of Wickliffe, O.
The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at his late residence, No. 238 Quimby avenue."
