Summarized from the Woodford County Journal, Eureka, Illinois of June 26, 1913: The remains of the late Dr. Lemuel Austin Ferry, were brought here last week from Geneseo, his late house, for interment. Dr. Ferry was so well known in Eureka where he lived for many years and was a leading citizen, that we take pleasure in printing the following extract from a long article that appeared in the Geneseo News of last week: Lemuel Austin Ferry was born in North Bloomfield, Trumbull County, Ohio, on October 15, 1843, and was a son of Noble Ferry and Abigail Flower, natives of New England and pioneer settlers of Trumbull County. His early life was spent on a farm and his early education was secured in the district schools. On July 6, 1861, in his eighteenth year, he enlisted in the Regular army and was assigned to Company K, Sixth U.S. Cavalry. He saw three years of the hardest kind of service. Soon after the close of the war, Mr. Ferry entered Georgetown University, at Washington, D.C, taking a course in medicine and surgery. After graduating from that institution, he returned to Ohio and entered the practice of his chosen profession. After practicing in Ohio for a number of years he came to Illinois, locating at Eureka, where he practiced medicine until 1891, when he came to Geneseo. On October 2, 1866, Mr. Ferry was married to Miss Laura Works at North Bloomfield, Ohio. Five children were born to this union four of whom survive. The surviving children are: Mrs. Ella (sic Helen) Thigpen, of Washington, D.C; Mrs. Josephine Morton, of Gray's Lake, Ill.; Miss Marie (sic Mary) Ferry, of Washington D.C; and Charles T. Ferry, of Cleveland, Ohio. All came to Geneseo for the funeral except Mrs. Thigpen. A son, Dr. Herbert Ferry died at his home in Poland, Ohio on March 14, just four months prior to the death of his father. The wife and mother passed away on November 25, 1886, and on February 14, 1888, Mr. Ferry was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Works, a sister of his first wife, at Eureka, III. No children were born to this union. Dr. Ferry's age at the time of his passing was 69 years, 7 months and 29 days. In the early part of February Dr. Ferry, accompanied by Mrs. Ferry, went to Poland, Ohio, upon receipt of the word that their son, Dr, Herbert Ferry, was seriously ill, and during this illness the son passed away on March 14. There is no doubt that the shock of the passing of the son, still in his young manhood, hastened the passing of the father, although he bore up bravely under the ordeal. Besides the wife and children mentioned above, there are two grandchildren, Robert Austin Ferry son of the late Dr. Herbert Ferry, and Marjorie Morton, daughter Mrs. Josephine Ferry Morton.
