James was brought to America from Cornwall, England in 1869 when he was three years old. His father worked in the mines in Republic, Michigan. James and his brothers also worked in the mines. In 1891 he left Michigan and went to Canada, crossing the country until he settled in British Columbia. He married Clara Jane Buddle in 1900. They had one daughter, Gladys, and three sons, Thomas Henry (Harry), Wilfrid and Clarence.
