Mariah Jane Chizum is the youngest child of John Chizum and Lucy Mathews. John and Lucy were married 13 Jan 1831 in Ross county, Ohio. John and Lucy moved to Rush county, Indiana sometime between the birth of their first and second child. In September 1838 there is a Land Patent Certificate #29519 for John Chism of Rush county, Indiana buying 80 acres in Clinton county, Indiana.

"At an early age she[Lucy] removed to Ohio and was married to John Chizum, by whom she was the mother of five children. Shortly after the birth of the youngest child[Mariah] the husband and father went down the river to cut cordwood near New Orleans, where wages were good. He never returned, but a relative who went with him came back and reported his death."

Maria Jane Chizum married Oliver C Cosby, 8 September 1853, Clinton county, Indiana (MR# c-3 page 98, Clinton county, Indiana) They were married by Rev Alfred Cave. The 1860 census of Lauramie township, Tippecanoe county, Indiana show Oliver and Mariah and their three oldest children. The 1870 census of Lauramie township, Tippecanoe county, Indiana show Oliver and Mariah in the same location. They are now the parents of eight children. One more daughter was born in 1872. Oliver died 15 Sep 1873. Their oldest daughter was married in 1872. Mariah was left to raise eight children on her own. Mariah died 19 Sep 1876 in Tippecanoe county, Indiana. Mariah was only 38 years old. She left nine children.
