Helen was the daughter of Leujay Perry and Bertha Elizabeth Lebold, who married on 22 Feb 1909 in Paulding Co., Ohio. I found seven children for them—Viola May, b. 1910; Mabel Agnes, b. 1911; Helen Catherine, b. 1914; Anna Marie, b. 1916; Lawrence Joseph, b. 1917; Theresa Margaret, b. 1920; and Charles Lewis, b. 1933.

I found Helen's parents and older sister on the 1910 Census, living in Harrison Twp., Paulding Co., Ohio. Leujay, 22, was a farmer. Bertha, 19, reported that she had had one child. There with her parents was 3-month-old Viola.

Sometime between daughter Anna's birth in September of 1916 and Lawrence's birth in December of 1917, the family moved from Ohio to Indiana. The 1920 Census caught up with them there, living in Harrison Twp., Pulaski Co., Indiana. Leujay, 32, was working a new farm. Bertha, 28, was tending to a household populated by five young children—Viola, 9; Mabel, 9; Helen, 5; Anna, 3; and Lawrence, 2.

The 1930 Census reflected yet another move, this time to North Bend, Starke Co., Indiana. Leujay Perry, 43, was noted as a dairy farmer. Bertha, 40, was home with the six children—Viola, 20; Mabel, 18; Helen, 15; Anna, 12; Lawrence, 11; and Theresa, 10.

Two years after that census, Helen married Isadore Edward Crist on 28 Jun 1932. They would have eight children together—Deloris Marie, b. 1933; Alice Louise, b. 1934; John Edward, b. 1936; Barbara Ann, b. 1937; twins Joseph and James, b. 1939; Patricia Margaret, b. 1944; and Marsha Lynn, b. ca. 1852.

When the 1940 Census came around, the Crist family was living in Tippecanoe Twp., Pulaski Co., Indiana. Isadore, 32, was a farmer. Helen, 26, would have had her hands full tending to the needs of six children—Delores, 6; Alice, 5; John, 4; Barbara Ann, 2; and 5-month-old twins Joseph and James (Louis on the record).

On his 16 Oct 1940 WWII registration, Isadore Crist, 32, reported that he was a self-employed farmer living in Monterey, Indiana. Wife Helen was noted as that person who would always know his address. He measured in at 5' 6" tall and weighed in at 128 lbs. and had brown eyes and hair.

The 1950 Census caught back up with the family in Harrison Twp., Pulaski Co., Indiana. Isadore Crist, 42, was busy with the farm. Helen, 35, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were Delores, 16; Alice, 15; John, 14; Barbara, 12; James and Joseph, 10; and Patricia, 5.

That 1950 Census was enumerated on April 14th. Exactly two months later, the unthinkable happened when on June 14th, Helen and Isadore's three sons John, Joseph and James, decided to go fishing. The three of them piled onto a tractor driven by a 17-year-old neighbor, John finding his perch standing on the drawbar at the back of the tractor, behind the seat. At some point, John fell off and was crushed by the back wheel of the tractor. The ONLY positive was, that for a 14-year-old boy, riding on a tractor with visions of largemouth bass on his line in his head, he was doing exactly what he wanted to be doing that ill-fated afternoon, but what a terrible blow for the family.

In 1952, Helen and Isadore's nest began to empty as daughter Delores married Darl Gene Miller. The other children followed suit, and by the end of 1970, the nest was empty.

On 28 Jun 1982, Helen and Isadore woke to a that golden milestone in their marriage. For better or worse, through sickness and in health, they had stayed the course, joining the ranks of that 50% that stayed married and that 5% that stayed married for fifty years.

Sadly, a year later, death parted them, claiming Isadore on 22 May 1983, his heart failing him in his 75th year of life. Helen eventually remarried, and she and husband Robert B. Waltz spent summers in Indiana and winters in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Helen lived to age 88, departing this earth on 28 Sep 2002, mourned by two surviving brothers, her seven children and a passel of grandchildren.
