US Congressman. He was born one of seven children (he also had a brother and five sisters) to Isaac De Peyster Teller and Alice Schenck Teller in Matteawan (now Beacon), New York, and completed preparatory studies, and then went on to hold several local offices. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative Gilbert Dean. A Whig, he then served New York's 12th District in the United States House of Representatives from 1854 to 1855. After his term in the United States Congress expired on March 3, 1855, he was succeeded in office by the United States Representative Killian Miller. After his time in public service had ended, he engaged in agricultural pursuits. He passed away suddenly at his farm in Beacon, New York, from heart disease while sitting in a buggy on April 30, 1868, at the age of 69, and was buried in the Fishkill Rural Cemetery in Fishkill, New York. He had married early in his life, but his wife had died in 1854. His uncle was United States Representative Abraham Henry Schenck, who served in the United States Congress from 1815 to 1817.
