They lived in Lexington, KY until about 1851 or 2. When they moved to Louisville, Ky until 1859 when they came to IL, to a farm. Shortly after coming to IL John died. John owned a Plantation in Ky and a large number of slaves. When he came to IL he left the slaves with a friend with the understanding that if he didn't come back he would free them. The trip from KY was made by steamboat from Louisville to St Louis then part of the family probably the women were sent over the "big Four" a nick name for a railroad. While the rest came by Spring wagon.
