Prominent Resident of City Was Former County Treasurer
A A Flegal of 1341 Maple avenue, former Muskingum county treasurer and prominent resident of this city, died at 8 o'clock Friday night in Good Samaritan Hospital at the age of 70.
Mr Flegal was stricken with a throat ailment on Memorial day and was admitted to the hospital of June 22.
As school teacher, traveller, county treasurer and business man, Mr Flegal was widely known to Zanesville and Muskingum county.
Born in Clearfield county, Pa., Nov 11, 1865, he was brought by his parents to Muskingum county and passed his entire life on his father's farm, located near the village of Norwich.
Mr Flegal studied so industriously in the district schools of the Norwich neighborhood as to be fitted for the post of instructor, and during the four year period between 1886 and 1890 he was a teacher Muskingum county schools. At the age of 25 years, he became a traveling salesman and for a number of years he was employed by the J E Owens Pottery Co., and the S A Weller Pottery Co.
In 1908 Republicans of Muskingum county place his name on their ticket and voters elected him to the important office of county treasurer. Two years later he was re-elected.
After completing his second term as county treasurer, Mr Flegal and his nephew Fred G Flegal bought controlling interest in the Zanesville Sand Co. and afterwards became full owners. He became president of the company which operated in Zanesville, Dresden, Rush Run, McLuney, Bremen, and Gallipolis, until 1931 when he sold his interest.
The he took over the William Burke Golf Club Co near Cooperville road and the Commercial Plating Co., later selling his interests in these concerns.
He rendered useful public service other than that of county treasurer. In 1914 Mayor William H Webster appointed him a memeber of the joint Muskingum county and Zanesville workhouse board and was president of that important body until 1917 when it was dicontinued. On June 23, 1917, the war department of the United States government appointed him a member of the World War board for Zanesville and in that capacity he was of valuable service until the close of the war.
He was an active member Grace M E Church, Commercial Travelers, owhich he served as a member of the executive committee, Zanesville Lodge no. 114, BPO Elks, and Exchange club.
On Dec 22, 1892 he was married to Miss Ella F Brown, a native of this county who survives him.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a brother, R T Flegal of Mead street, a niece Olive DeGarmo Everett of Detroit and two nephews, Fred G Flegal of Maple avenue and Harry M Flegal of Euclid aveune.
The body was taken to the William Thompson and Son funeral home pending completion of funeral arrangements.
