U.S. Congressman. Entering politics, he served as a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1798-1804). In 1811, he was elected as a Republican to the Twelfth Congress through the Seventeenth Congresses, reelected as a Crawford Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and elected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth Congress through Twenty-second Congresses, serving until 1833. After leaving Congress, he served on the Committee of the Virginia State Executive Department, until his death.
