SALTILLO - William Clifton "Cliff" Barber, 92, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo after a sudden illness. He had been a resident of Magnolia Manor in Tupelo for the past year. Before that, his home was in the Beech Springs community in Saltillo. He was born Sept. 1, 1919, in Mantachie to Ula Spradling Barber and Will Barber. In 1986 he retired from TVA, where he was known as "Bull." He was a lifetime member of Beech Springs Freewill Baptist Church in the Beech Springs community and served in numerous positions from deacon to cook. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Barber was an avid gardener and loved to grow huge tomatoes and turnips, including a turnip that weighed 25 pounds. He enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was younger.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with the Rev. Dennis Kizzire officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. Holland Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his son, W.C. Barber (Phyllis) of Pontotoc; his daughter, Linda Cochran (David) of Tupelo; two brothers, Marvin Barber of Mooreville and Garvin Barber of Tupelo; one granddaughter, Missie Young (John) of Tupelo; two great-grandchildren, Kelsie Cochran and Garrett Horton, both of Tupelo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Alice Barber, on March 23, 1999; a grandson, John David Cochran, on Aug. 22, 2008; and three sisters, Gladys Mears, Odell Nichols and Opal Foote.

Pallbearers will be Harry Floyd, Jamie King, David Putt, Sonny Oxner, Charles Ray Barber and Billy Irvin.

Honorary pallbearer will be a special grandnephew, Seth Sledge.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time Friday.
