Mr. Ferreira passed away two years after he had fulfilled his passionate desire to win American citizenship. He left an estate in excess of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars to be distributed among seven nieces and nephews who lived in the Bay Area. I know for a fact that he had given to them all generously during his lifetime. Now, after his death each received over eighteen thousand dollars.
Two years after his death, the caretaker of the cemetery where he had been buried called me, and suggested that I write to this nephews and tell them that a marker should be placed on his grave. He said it would cost about forty dollars. I wrote to them and made it emphatically clear that each would only put up four dollars to have the marker placed on their uncle's grave. Three years passed, and I chanced to see the caretaker and asked him if there was a marker on Mr. Ferreira's grave. He said there was not. O, human ingratitude! What a terrible vice!
