Joseph McGrail and his wife Elizabeth Jane had a son who died in infancy, James Francis McGrail (Nov 1964 - Jan 1965).

Joseph McGrail's parents were Harold Leo McGrail and Marcia Bubba McNamara McGrail. His grandparents were Patrick McGrail and Margaret McGrail.

An obituary in the Washington Post said that Maj McGrail "served very honorably as an officer in the U.S. Army and saw duty in Vietnam and Korea." Following his military service, Joseph McGrail worked as a special magistrate and, until his death, continued to practice as an attorney. "Always felt that the doing of justice was more important than the collection of fees. Alas, some of his clients agreed. A convivial companion in the old style to many in Alexandria and Arlington, and certainly further afield, a welcome guest and friend to many restaurateurs and barkeeps, a connoisseur of fine, and cheap cigars, and a lifelong golfer." At age 76, he died after a life heartily lived.
