Obituary
Mary Ellen Knox, the second child of Asa and Almira Knox, was born in Fairfield Maine, June 22, 1840, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Gray, in Keithsburg, March 23, 1913, aged 72 years, 9 months and 1 day.
Deceased came with her parents to Mercer county, Illinois when a child and has since spent her life here. In 1856 she was united in marriage to Nicholas Highfield, who preceded her in death, in 1889. Eleven children were born to this union, four dying in infancy. The remaining ones are Mrs. J. W. Jackson, Mrs. Walter Gray, Mrs. Lon Campbell, of Keithsburg, Mrs. C. H. Brewer, of Muscatine, Iowa; Mrs. J. B. Martin, of Aledo, Mrs. A. J. Clark of San Francisco and Henry H. Highfield of Grandview, Iowa. She also leaves 36 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, two brothers and one sister, S.B. Knox and A. L. Knox, of Keithsburg, and Mrs. D. A. Brown, of Joy, besides a number of friends and neighbors.
In 1895 Mrs. Highfield united with the United Brethren church, worshipping at that time in Keithsburg, and she remained a member of that body until her death. She was a very great sufferer, her last illness covering a period of three months. All through her illness she was tenderly cared for and everything that human love could do, was done, to make her last days as comfortable as posible.
Funeral services were held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, from the Christian church, with Rev. L.F. DePolster officiating. Interment was in Green Mound cemetery.
