John L. Brown was born April 30, 1855 in Pickens Co. SC. His parents were L. A. Brown and Eliza Harvard Brown of SC and Ala respectively. He married Elcaney Jane Jones in Pickens Coounty between 1874-1876. They had 8 children as follows: Loula or Lula, Adeline, Augustus Alexander, Lidie, Mittie or Mattie, Frank, Julius and Walter.
John died April 17, 1922 in Shady Dale, Jasper Co., Ga. His death certificate (#9942-23) states "kicked by a mule. He was dead when found." The DC also states that he was employed by the Central of Georgia Railroad. John & Elcaney's resting place have not yet been discovered. (Research by Jane Williams & Newton County Hist. Soc.)
