Rev. Walter Bowie, Jr. went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Rev Bowie was born to Rosie and Walter Bowie, Sr. on April 5, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois. He accepted Christ at an early age. He acknowledged his call to preach in 1957 and was ordained in 1964.
Rev. Bowie received his education in the Chicago Public Schools. It was during this time that he was an accomplished boxer and was known as the "Mongoose Kid". He was also an avid swimmer, runner, archer, hunter and fisherman. These activities helped prepare him for his service to his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He received an honorable discharge. Upon returning from military service, Rev. Bowie attended Chicago Baptist Institute and Moody Bible Institute. He also attended Roosevelt University to complete work on a degree in Philosopy. While in graduate school, he met and married the love of his life, Geraldine R. Basley, in February, 1960.
Rev. Bowie was an active participant in numerous local, state and national organizations. He served as president of the Christian Youth Fellowship of Greater Chicago;the Midwest Youth Conference, a Five-State organization; Secretary of the Illinois National Baptist State Convention; Moderator of Mt. Olive Baptist District of Southern Illinois; Assistant Secretary of the National Baptist Convention of America; Vice President of the Pastor's Conference of the National Baptist Convention; founder of the Southern Illinois Conference on Christian Theology; Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Crisis Pregnancy Center in MS.; and member of the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Family Forum.
He was an avid reader and accomplished writer. Rev. Bowie was the author of many published articles, as a contributing editor for the Counsel of Chalcedon, the Journey, and the Harbinger magazines. He also served as a writer for the Sunday School Commentary and Baptist Training Union Quarterly for the National Baptist Publishing Board. Most recently, a compilation of his sermons, writings and letters were published in a book titled, SPURGEON IN BLACK: Rev. Walter Bowie, Jr., Vol. 1, Deborah E. Willis. Author.
Rev. Bowie served as pastor of Bethesda Baptist Church, Galesburg, Illinois; the Rock Hill Baptist Church; Carbondale, Illinois; Mt. Helm Baptist Church, Jackson, MS., and for the last 22 years, as the founding pastor and organizer of his beloved Koinonia Baptist Church; Jackson, MS.
Rev. Bowie was preceded in death by his parents, Rosie and Walter Bowie, Sr., a sister, Pearl Carson, (Gaylane), and two brothers, James Bowie (Rose-deceased) and Arnold Bowie, (Grace).
He leaves to mourn his passing, brothers and sisters, Elsie Smith (Morris-deceased), Eddie Bowie (Geraldine), Clarence Bowie, Lawrence Bowie (Laurene), Darlene Johnson, (Joseph), Lester Bowie (Ozetta-deceased) and Audrey Sneed. His wife of over 51 year, Dr. Geraldine R. Bowie, two children, Walter "Skip" Bowie III (Michele), and Kimberly Antoinette Bowie Treacy (Michael). Four adopted daughters, Pamela Denise Williams, Deborah Willis, Dr. Veda Kowalski (William), Dimple Ann Smith, and God-daughter, Coty Nannette Murphy (Daryl).
During his life, Rev Bowie was blessed to enjoy the love and respect of his nine grandchildren, Mikyle, Elijah, Kelaiah, Nehemiah, Micah, Isaiah, Zecharia, Ezekiel and Malachi, who will sorely miss "grandpa".
He also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends who wll miss "The Mongoose Kid, Uncle Sonny, Uncle Jim, Uncle Walter, The Boo, Jim-the Baptist and Young Bowie."
The homegoing celebrations of Rev. Bowie's life will be held: (family visitation) Friday, October 7, from 6 p.m. -8 p.m. at the Koinonia Baptist Church, 4935 Clinton Blvd., Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be, Saturday, October 8, at 12:00 noon at Koinonia Baptist Church and Interment (Military Burial) in the Mississippi Veteran's Memorial Cemetry in Newton County on Monday, October 10, 2011.
In lieu of flowers you are asked to donate to the Mission Emphasis Fund of the Koinonia Baptist Church, 4935 Clinton, Blvd., Jackson, MS 39209.
