Joseph J. Smith, age 57, prominent railroad employe for many years, and well known citizen of this city, died at his residence, 809 Church avenue, Sunday, 12 noon after an illness of several months.

Mr. Smith was an active member of the South Side Baptist Church for 34 years, 18 of which he served as general superintendent of the Sunday school.

For many years he was connected with the Southern Railway System and a member of the executive committee of the Carmen's Union.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lula Smith, two sons, J. F. and W. G. Smith; three grandchildren; four sisters, Mesdames Annie Boze, all of Meridian; W. F. Griffin, H. A. Campbell and Mary Roberts, all of Quitman; six brothers, E. G. Smith, Enterprise; W. C. Smith, Laurel; I. J. Smith of Gilbertown, Ala.; J. A. Smith, Enterprise; G. W. Smith, Maulding, Mo., and Alex Smith of California.

Funeral services will be held from South Side Baptist church Monday at 4 p. m., Rev. Blanding Vaughan, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Magnolia cemetery.
