Richard died on April 1, 1944 at Staten Island Hospital in New York City. He had been living with his daughter Mary E. Gelchion who was married to Raymond Knorr.

Gelchion, 85, formerly of 46 McAdoo Avenue, who died Sunday at Staten Island Hospital. Born in Jersey City, he moved to Staten Island a few years ago to live with his daughter. Mrs. Mary E. Knorr. A farmer he was manager of a farm in Chester, New York for many years. Besides his daughter, he is survived by his sons, William, Edward, who is in England with the army, and Frank Gelchion; four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
