Per 'Who was Who in DeKalb County" by Elizabeth S. Howard: DR. THOMAS HAYNE APPLETON was born May 28, 1865 in Collinsville, Alabama, Father: Rev. John B. Appleton, Mother: Martha Frances Ellis Appleton. He married Emma Coker Appleton on November 14, 1893. Children: Hayne Coker, James Lamar, Wesley Howard, Dr. Skelton, Mary A. (Garrett) and Bulow Wilson,. Dr. Appleton attended Collinsville public schools, Mobile Medical College, and Chattanooga Medical College, receiving his M.D. degree in 1892. He began his practice in Collinsville during the horse-and-buggy days and served a wide area in Sand and Lookout Mountains and in the valleys for more than 50 years. He was always interested in church and school activities and in the welfare of the DeKalb County farmers. He served for many years on the County Board of Education and took an active part in the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. He was a loyal member of the Collinsville Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and for many years teacher of the Men's Bible Class.
