Elizabeth grew up in the Swale River valley of Yorkshire. In 1849 she came to New Diggings, WI with her family. She married Anthony Fowler 28 April 1853 in New Diggings. They had five children: John Richard 1854 (died as an infant), James William 1856, John Richard 1858, Margaret Ann 1851 and Anthony 1863 or 1864, born after his father died in the Civil War.
Elizabeth then married Anthony's brother Barnard, who lived nearby, on 8 March 1864 in Hazel Green. Barnard had five children from previous marriages. Joseph 1846 was his child with Deborah Daykin (1824 - 1848)in Yorkshire. Esther Thomas 1851, Mary Jane 1853, George Thomas 1858 and Deborah Ellen 1859 were his children with his second wife, Deborah Hird (1831 - 1860).
Elizabeth became his third wife, and together they had William Spensley 1865, Elizabeth Hannah 1867, Barnard 1869 and Jonas 1872.
