At 1 p.m. Saturday, January 2, 1954, a tragic death occurred in this area when a farm tractor rolled over, pinning Irving Fitzgerald, 58, underneath as he was attempting to detach a wagon from the tractor. Dr. Burch K. Reed who was summoned pronounced him dead upon his arrival, death being caused by a broken neck and crushed chest.

The accident occurred as Mr. Fitzgerald was driving the tractor from the barn of his farm, two miles from Sandy Creek on the Mannsville-Ellisburg road. Attached to the tractor was a wagon filled with fertilizer which he was drawing to the field. After he entered the field which was about a quarter of a mile from the barn, the wagon became mired in a rut. Mr. Fitzgerald was trying to detach the wagon from the tractor when the tractor overturned, pinning him between the steering gear and the seat.

When Mr. Fitzgerald failed to return to the barn, members of his family became alarmed about 1:30 p.m. His son, Paul Fitzgerald and a farmhand, Leo Vandemark investigated and found Mr. Fitzgerald. State police investigated and Dr. Reed was appointed coroner's physician by Assistant District Attorney Robert M. Weldon of Watertown, who said no inquest or autopsy would be held.

Mr. Fitzgerald was born December 10, 1895, in the town of Lorraine, a son of the late John and Mary Ann Smith Fitzgerald. He attended Lorraine and Stoney Creek Schools.

On December 1, 1923, he married Miss Grace Caroline Cooper daughter of the late Orson and Mabel Cooper of Ellisburg in the Episcopal rectory at Pierrepont Manor.

Mr. Fitzgerald was a farmer all his life and had lived in his present home since his marriage. He was a member of Christ Episcopal church, Ellisburg.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Grace Caroline Cooper Fitzgerald; a son, Paul Fitzgerald; a grandson, Steven Fitzgerald, all at home; four brothers, William Fitzgerald and Emmett Fitzgerald, both of Mannsville, Gerald Fitzgerald, Henderson and Clifford Fitzgerald, Red Creek; a sister, Mrs. Liilian Fitzgerald, Henderson and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were at the home Tuesday at 1 p.m. and at 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal church, Ellisburg, with Rev. Gilbert Hemsley, Union City, N.J., officiating, assisted by Rev. Robert Ayers, rector of the Adams-Ellisburg and Pierrepont Manor Episcopal churches. Burial was in Ellisburg cemetery.

Bearers were Orson Bullock, Donald Clark, Harold Redden, Donald Hoxie, Paul Goodnough, and Glenn LeClair.
