Served in the French Revolutionary War and an officer when discharged. Due to his service he later developed a lack of smell. Stories claim that he thought a skunk was a cat he rescued. Grandma Eliza(Fred's wife) ran him out of the house with a broom. He did not understand that what he rescued was a skunk. This was while living in Montpelier at his brothers home.
