Merle Eugene Flatt was born May 22, 1927 in Blabon, ND, the son of Marvin and Luvia I. (McKay) Flatt. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Baldwin Township near Pillsbury, ND. He attended Baldwin School. His father died when Merle was young, so he helped his mother on the farm. On April 3, 1951, he entered the US Army. On August 25, 1951, he married Marion Smith in Pillsbury. Merle was discharged on April 2, 1953. Following his discharge, he farmed with his father-in-law, Lester Smith. He and Marion purchased a farm southwest of Pillsbury and continued to farm until 2002 when they moved to Valley City. Merle enjoyed a good cup of coffee and visiting. He liked playing pinochle and bowling. He was a member of the Hope American Legion and was a past township officer. Merle is survived by his wife, Marion of Valley City; sons, Mike of Hannaford, ND and Maynard (Sheila) of Valley City; grandchildren, Luke, Matt, and Kayla Flatt, Eric and McCall Flatt; and great grandchildren, Skylar Flatt, Logan Flatt, and Jourdyn Flatt. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers.
