Charles attended West Point where he was in the Class of 1879. On June 13, 1907, he was in attendance of the class' annual reunion. In the year 1914, he was a 2nd Lt. commanding the 10th Cavalry at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. The 10th was a mounted regiment of black soldiers called Buffalo Soldiers. Charles' military career was cut short when he suffered a mental break down during his second year of command at Fort Huachuca. After a brief stay at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco he was transferred to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he spent the rest of his life. He was a member of the United States Cavalry.
