The son of Thomas Nugent (1812-1895) and Eleanor Ann Morgan (1818-1862), James was born in his father's hometown of Marysburg, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada.

In 1877, James began working with his brothers, Byron and Daniel C. Nugent, in St. Louis, Missouri where they had founded a store known as B. Nugent and Brother Dry Goods Company.

James married Lillian W. "Lillie" Patton in 1886 in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. They were the parents of 7 children.

As time went on, James became more and more actively involved in the managerial side of the Nugent Brothers' store. When it was incorporated in 1899, he was elected vice president and held that post until he passed away.

Thanks to his hands-on style and many years spent on the floor in his capacity as store superintendent, James became a familiar figure to large numbers of regular customers. It was reported that he was highly regarded by his employees as well.

At the time of his death due to kidney disease and a heart problem, James was 66 years, 4 months and 9 days old. He was buried on 18 Oct 1918 and was survived by his wife, Lillie.
